Position monitoring on loading systems - Switchgear for extreme applications

Petrol, natural gas and liquid gas are typical products handled using loading systems manufactured by Emco Wheaton. These loading systems are frequently to be found at the end of a process chain, at production sites or logistics stations like fuel depots or, in "ship to shore" applications, at ports.

Dispositivi esposti a temperature estreme, acqua salata, incrostazioni, vibrazioni continue, atmosfere esplosive: test condotti in condizioni reali possono rivelare molte cose.

"For us it is all about the Extreme". Switches face hard times on the island of Helgoland

Cold, heat, UV rays, saltwater: on the island of Helgoland in the North Sea, the conditions are tough. For one year, steute tested its switchgear products there. In conversation with P&A, steute representatives Rainer Lumme, Product Manager Extreme, and Carsten Both, Head of Industrial Development, explain how this came about, what results the tests produced, and why such tests are becoming increasingly important.

Position monitoring in Extreme environments

The loading systems made by Emco Wheaton are used all over the world for handling large quantities of petrol, natural gas, liquefied gas or chemicals. To monitor the position of the loading arms, the company from Kirchhain near Marburg uses Ex position switches from the steute Extreme range, which remain reliable even in subzero temperatures.

Exposed to the elements. Switchgear for handling of bulk goods in ports

Switching devices used for the handling of bulk goods in ports need to meet high demands regarding corrosion resistance. But theoretical standards and practical experience do not always amount to the same thing. With this in mind, steute has had several switchgear series in its "Extreme" range tested in real-life conditions – on the South Mole of the island of Helgoland. Here the Fraunhofer IFAM (Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials) has a test facility for just such tasks.

"Digitalisation requires agility and close customer contact". From a manufacturer of components to a provider of systems and network solutions

Numerous automation experts have shifted in the last few years from component manufacturers to solution providers. In order to visualise its own development in this direction, steute has changed its company name. Managing Director Marc Stanesby explains why this change was necessary and why customers can only profit from this increased skills set.
